Apply to be the BAME Observer to UK Council

As part of the Society's commitment 'to condemn racism and racist behaviour in all forms and to declare zero tolerance of conscious and unconscious racial bias in our organisation', UK Council are urging members to apply for a new role, SoR Equalise BAME Observer.

SoR Equalise is the Society's equality and diversity network, aiming to:

  • Provide a support mechanism for members on equality and diversity issues
  • Campaign/lobby on issues of concern for members
  • Provide advice and support for members in the workplace
  • To become more proactive in the Society and promote equality in the workplace

"One of the key tasks of Equalise is to advise UK council on equality issues and this role will help to ensure a robust channel remains open, ensuring clarity as the Society works to deliver the anti-racist promise,” said Peter Higgs, the Society's national equality officer.

"The role of Observer to UK Council will ensure that our BAME members have a place at the 'top table' and that the equality and diversity voice is heard. Equalise is proud to stand side by side with individuals and groups across the world to shout, 'BLACK LIVES MATTER', and to call for an immediate end to discrimination in all of its forms."

The post is open to full members of the Society who are in current employment. They are also required to be members of the Equalise network, which Society members can join by completing the online application form at

The successful applicant will be elected by the members of Equalise. They will attend UK Council meetings six times a year in London and provide a BAME perspective to discussions, as well as attending SoR Equalise meetings and occasional other external events. The term of office is two years. Reasonable expenses will be paid by the SoR.
