Maria Murray, SoR Professional Officer for Scotland and UK Radiation Protection Lead, attended a Scottish Parliamentary election hustings meeting on 19 April 2021. Focused on health, representatives from six parties responded to questions around the state of Scottish NHS healthcare.

Maria asked about radiographer recognition because neither therapeutic or diagnostic radiographers featured in the Scottish Government Cancer Recovery Plan. Another radiographer asked about the availability and funding of education and training in all levels of the profession.

Maria said: ‘I am pleased to say that we got a mention of our profession at least four times. Radiographers are imperative.’

Some of the issues discussed included workplace bullying, staff shortages, burnout and mental wellbeing, flexible working, waiting times and targets, and the concern that some of these issues have been prevalent in the Scottish NHS system for years.

The Scottish MPs who appeared included: Emma Harper, SNP; Donald Cameron, Scottish Conservatives; Alison Johnstone, Scottish Greens; Jackie Baillie, Scottish Labour; Alex Cole Hamilton, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
