Published: 03 November 2020 Students

Our first ever Student Welcome Week (SWW) was held from Monday 26 until Friday 30 October 2020. The virtual gathering was designed to offer wisdom and support to new students joining the profession this year. Topics included self-care, what to expect on your first placement and asking questions that you never felt you could ask.

SWW was launched by Richard Evans (CEO, Society and College of Radiographers) and Chris Kalinka (President, Society and College of Radiographers). To view their welcome address, please see here

Recordings of each of the webinars are now available, alongside welcome introductions from Richard and Chris:

Preparing for the year ahead

This webinar was chaired by final-year diagnostic radiography student, Chloe Altham and focused on how to approach your academic studies in your first year. Topics covered included; recommended reading, managing workload and coursework, preparing for examination periods, using student support services and how to adapt to virtual learning.

What to expect on Clinical Placement

Chaired by final-year therapeutic radiography student, Niamh O'Hara, this session shared tips and advice on how to make the most of your clinical experience. Topics covered included; what to expect on your first placement, finding your place within the team, how to maintain a work/life balance, access to resources, and working safely through Covid-19.

The importance of Self-Care

This webinar was chaired by Student Support Officer, Nichola Jamison. The session promoted shared experiences of self-care throughout the student journey and had input from UK Council member and Practice Educator, Tom Welton. Topics covered included: Self-awareness and finding your baseline, Good self-care practices, Employing your coping mechanisms through challenging times, Access to resources and taking stock of current circumstances.

What we wish we knew (A Q&A session with new-graduates)

Chaired by first-year diagnostic student, Ben Potts, this session answered some of those questions we all wanted to ask at the beginning of our journey, but never did. Utilising the contrast of experience between our new students and new graduates, this open Q&A allowed lessons and experiences to be shared, useful advice to be imparted, and for participants to ask the 'real' questions.

Becoming active in your profession (Get involved!)

The final webinar of SWW was chaired by newly-qualified therapeutic radiographer and student forum member, Kate Shrewsbury-Gee. The session was designed to encourage members to make the most of professional opportunities and had input from this year's SoR President, Chris Kalinka, and Student Support Officer, Nichola Jamison. Topics covered included; The benefits of getting involved in your profession, student representative and ambassador roles, attending conferences and events, contributing to professional publications, embracing leadership and the value of the student voice.
