ESTRO Early Career Committee launches survey on workforce shortages

The ESTRO early career committee is seeking to better understand what contributes to a positive working environment via a survey

The European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology is inviting Therapeutic Radiographers from across the UK and Europe to complete a survey on work setting perceptions.

After launching a working group on workforce shortages across radiotherapy disciplines and regions in 2024, the ESTRO Early Career Committee is seeking understanding of what contributes to a positive working environment and what keeps professionals in roles.

To explore these questions, the committee has developed an anonymous survey, accessible online now, to be completed by anyone working in radiotherapy or oncology.

'Retention from a positive narrative'

Research from the Early Career Committee has highlighted that staff shortages are challenging across countries and that they affect all disciplines in radiotherapy.

A short pilot survey through the Young ESTRO Opinion Panel revealed valuable insights into factors influencing retention. Now, the committee aims to investigate the topic on a larger scale.

A spokesperson for the committee said: “Our goal is to approach retention from a positive narrative—identifying factors that enhance job retention and foster long-term commitment within radiotherapy departments. At the same time, we recognise that retention is not only critical for institutions but also for individual professionals.”

Issues like limited resources, frequent organisational changes or team turnover directly impact work environment conditions, they added.

Supporting the workforce across Europe

By sharing experiences, respondents can help to shape evidence-based strategies that improve workplace conditions, benefiting both current and future radiotherapy professionals.

Spencer Goodman, professional officer for radiotherapy at the SoR, said: “Contributing to this kind of research is valuable—Therapeutic Radiographers bring essential insights into the realities of frontline cancer care. By sharing their experiences, professionals can help build a stronger evidence base that informs future strategies to support the workforce across Europe.”

The questionnaire will ask respondents what motivates them to stay in radiotherapy and how these positive aspects can be reinforced. Findings will be shared widely to support departments in developing policies that enhance job satisfaction and long-term engagement.

The deadline to complete the survey is 15 August. View the survey here.
