SoR calls for radiographers to help improve preceptorship in the profession

The SoR has developed a survey seeking respondents on the accessibility and range of preceptorship offers available

Published: 07 October 2024 Surveys

The Society of Radiographers is calling for members to complete NHS England’s preceptorship in radiography survey, to understand availability of offers across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man.

As part of the ongoing work funded by NHS England’s Workforce, Training and Education Directorate, the survey seeks to find out more about the scope, accessibility and range of preceptorship which diagnostic and therapeutic radiography professionals have access to.

Interested members should complete the survey before 11 October in order to inform the commission's work in improving preceptorship so radiographers can access support when they need it.

Support and guidance through career transition

Career transition is a constant possibility throughout any professional’s journey – whether starting a new role, moving to a new organisation, or returning to work after a period away.

Preceptorship offers structured support and guidance to help radiographers feel more confident during these key moments.

Both Therapeutic and Diagnostic Radiographers from practitioner level onwards who work in imaging and radiotherapy services across the UK can participate.

The views of members who have been qualified less than 24 months, have been internationally recruited, or have Returned to Practice, are particularly requested.

Understanding need and access

Members do not need experience of undertaking a formal period of preceptorship to complete the survey.

The “Scoping profession-specific preceptorship needs” survey can be found here.

For those currently or formerly a preceptor themselves, a separate survey seeking to understand the experiences, needs, workload capacity and training requirements of the role is available.

The Preceptor Survey can be found here instead.

Ongoing support for the profession

Birmingham City University was commissioned by the SoR, with funding from the Workforce Training and Education Directorate NHS England, to deliver a UK wide project scoping for therapeutic radiography and diagnostic radiography profession specific needs in preceptorship.

It aims to create recommendations which work with and complement the Health and Care Professions Council’s Principles for Preceptorship and the NHS England AHP Preceptorship Standards and Framework.
