SoR members urged to complete 2026 Diagnostic Radiography Workforce Census

Participation shapes radiography’s future by informing the SoR, workforce planners and education providers of the state of the profession

The SoR is inviting diagnostic radiology service managers to complete the 2026 Diagnostic Workforce Census now.

Completing the census ensures the society has accurate and up-to-date information on the radiographic workforce, essential for understanding the needs of an adequately resourced workforce and helping to influence policy makers.

This year the questions have been streamlined and the process simplified to reduce the time it takes to respond.

'An adequately resourced workforce'

Alexandra Lipton, professional officer for senior service managers and cross sectional imaging lead at the SoR, said: “In these challenging times, the importance of diagnostic imaging and the need for an adequately resourced workforce has been recognised. Obtaining accurate and up to date information on the radiographic workforce is essential and undoubtedly offers an opportunity for the profession to influence policy makers.

“We do appreciate that you are required to submit data to many other organisations but would urge that you complete our census as we are the recognised voice for the radiographic profession.”

Obtaining information from all organisations delivering diagnostic radiography services – including both NHS and independent sector providers from all UK countries – is vital to ensure accurate and up-to-date snapshots of the field.

The census should be completed by a department’s radiology services manager or equivalent, on behalf of all diagnostic radiography (medical imaging) services provided by their hospital or workplace. One response is needed even for managers responsible for multiple sites.

The census should be submitted before 6 July, and will take around 15 minutes to complete. Members will receive a link to complete the form through their email address.

Each census link is unique to the recipients’ organisation; it will remember progress made and so enables managers to come back later to finish. Each link should be used for one response only and should not be shared.

Managers who have not received the email but want to complete the census can get in touch via this form: Help Us Reach You.
