This Heart Unions Week, the SoR is encouraging members to celebrate the vital work of trade unions and workplace representatives in protecting employment rights, developing learning opportunities and improving workplace safety.
Taking place from 9 to 15 February 2026, Heart Unions Week provides a chance for union members to share why these organisations are vital for everyone at work, and encourage people who aren't yet in a union to join.
Rachel Benson, one such union rep, shared her thoughts and experiences on becoming a representative for the Society of Radiographers:
"I only recently became a Society of Radiographers rep following a pay dispute in our department. At that time, I reached out to Helen Wickham [SoR regional officer] for advice and support, and with her guidance, we were able to resolve the issue through firm, well-worded emails. This experience showed me the real impact that the SoR can have and inspired me to become an industrial relations and learning rep myself.
"I chose the SoR because of its specialist focus on radiography and the professional support it offers, which felt more relevant to our role than other unions. Since becoming a rep, I have seen firsthand the positive changes that SoR involvement can bring. Our department now recognises the value of having someone with negotiation and communication skills, and the difference it makes when staff feel supported and heard.
"The role has also helped me grow professionally and personally. I have had to communicate with senior leaders, including the head of hospital finance—something I never imagined I would be able to do. The SoR gave me the confidence and skills to do this effectively. I have learned that sometimes, a firm, well-written email is all it takes to resolve a problem. Being a rep has strengthened my communication, advocacy, and leadership skills, and I feel proud to be able to support my colleagues in a meaningful way.
"Being an SoR rep isn’t always easy, but it’s meaningful and you support colleagues, challenge unfairness, and make real change happen. The SoR provides training for the role and a strong support network with fellow reps across the area."
