'We wanted our students and alumni to know we care'

When we knew lockdown was likely, St. George’s started to put remote learning teaching and student support into place.

Many students, especially first years, missed the daily contact with us and their fellow students as campus closed. As course lead, a lot of my time was given to supporting students and allaying their concerns as the quarantine began.

As we all struggled with the fear and realisation of the impact of Covid-19, the support aspects of our educator roles became even more vital.

Colleagues from the department of paramedics had put together a montage displaying their support for students. We loved the idea too. We wanted to convey our support to all students and alumni from radiography.

I requested photographs depicting something about us as individuals to help the bonds, the relationships we had built with our students and alumni. Some show our hobbies. Some our clinical role. Some us with our children. Something about us as individuals.

My son, Cameron, pulled the photos together into our montage, and we are all very proud. Students have said it was a lovely, welcome gesture. A reminder of us as individuals thinking of each of them, as individuals.

And the first year students responded with their own montage. We were over the moon. I have to say I cried.

Covid-19 has and continues to be very difficult for many people for multiple reasons. It has shown us that caring and compassion go a long way to foster good relationships and just make life a little better.

We wanted our students and alumni, our St. George’s family, to know we care and are thinking of them all.

Stay safe.
