  • SWAP pod series | Episode 1: About Technical Levels

    The Society of Radiographers (SoR) present the Support Worker Assistant Practitioners (SWAP) Podcast, funded by NHSe.

    Hosted by The SoR's, Sue Johnson, Professional Officer of Clinical Imaging, this podcast covers an occupationally focused qualification titled, Technical Levels. An new initiative first introduced in sept 2020 for 16 to 19 year olds. Aimed to provide young people the opportunity to experience the radiography which will hopefully encourage them to embark on a career within the field.

    Sue is joined by:

    - Richard Griffin,
    Professor of Healthcare Management at King's College London, where his focus is the NHS clinical support workforce. He has been working with the SoR helping to develop the Society's resources aimed at the radiography support workforce and those who work with them.

    - Karen
    Head of Department, Radiology at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Karen currently serves as the Head of the Radiology Department at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust.

    Karen is focused on establishing an Apprentice Radiographer rolling program for the department and introducing apprentice qualifications for other non-Radiographer roles. This initiative aims to empower staff and build the workforce from within, reflecting Karen's commitment to professional development and departmental growth.

    - Naomi
    Naomi is Deputy Head of Radiology at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. After completing her BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography at the University of Cumbria, where she was honoured with the ‘Dr Harold Tulloh Award’, she went on to study an MSc in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. She further specialised in CT Cologram and Barium Swallow Imaging, completing PgC’s at the University of Salford in CT Colonography and Barium Swallow Reporting, before stepping into a leadership role.
    Naomi focuses on improving and enhancing cancer pathways by optimising imaging services; ultimately improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. With extensive clinical experience, she has played a pivotal role in advancing radiology services, mentoring future radiographers, and driving service improvements. She is passionate about education and innovation and continues to shape the future of medical imaging through strategic planning and service development.

    The Society of Radiographers (SoR) present the Support Worker Assistant Practitioners (SWAP) Podcast, funded by NHSe.

    This episode of SWAP is about work experience. Sue Johnson, Professional Officer of Clinical Imaging, sits down with Melanie Smith and David Tao, two individuals who are integral in providing a service that specialises in delivering work experience to students who may be interested in Radiography.

    Sue is joined by:

    - Melanie Smith
    Melanie is a Level 7 qualified NHS People professional with Chartered Fellowship of the CPID and senior experience of working in various people related roles in NHS settings throughout her career.

    - David Tao
    David is a Diagnostic Radiographer who joined the NHS in 2014 and serves as the Clinical Services Manager for the Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He oversees the operational delivery of the CDC programme and spearheads the workforce redevelopment programme within the Imaging department. In this role, he has a strong focused on developing different career pathways for Imaging AHPs and AHP support staff and is a strong advocate for initiatives to support workforce retention and service improvement on clinical shop floor.
